My Neighbors the Yamadas

Tue Mar 24, 2009, 7:45 PM
I have a question; does anyone know what program was used to make this movie?

I know it was all done digitally, but I'm wondering what specific softwares they used.

EDIT:

I figured it out! Thanks very much to :iconraindropmemory: for directing me to the Toonz website/program [link]

It actually says specifically on the site that Ghibli used it in My Neighbors the Yamadas, hurray.

I am thinking single frame conventional art on celluloid. That is my best guess. Each frame was hand drawn and then colored. I know it looks like it was done in water colors but that can be easily duplicated.

No, I know that the entire film was done digitally, because they couldn't get that look with traditional celluloid. I just can't find the specific program. Thanks for the guess though!

I think they use Toonz[link] :)

This page on their website mention about Ghibli's work [link]
They use it on Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and even the latest Ponyo on the Cliff.

It's probably a program specific to the company. A lot of animation studios create their own animation programs based on general stuff from other purchasable programs. I knwo Pixar is like that and a few others. For a style like that, it might even be a 3D aniamtion program, because 3D Studio Max has an option of making the images look liek pen and ink pictures that can move. Might try wikipedia if anything.

Huh, that's really interesting. Even if they didn't use it in yamadas it's good info! Thanks a lot!

Malformed URL in your link, there's a surplus "]" on the end.

Having watched and loved almost all of the Ghibli works (not My Neighbours the Yamadas, incidentally), I'm interested to have discovered what they used, thanks for sharing.

Whoops, should work now! Ha ha.
